Clean Eating: All Natural, Sugar-Free Tropical Popsicles!

popsicleThis summer I’ve been on a quest to create simple and healthy sweet treats that aren’t full of sugar, if any at all.

My husband Bruce has a big time sweet tooth that we’ve been trying to quell by eating more clean foods, exercising regularly and using natural sweeteners instead of refined sugar.  We’re both big fans of agave nectar when some sweetness is necessary, but we’ve even been skipping that of late.

Our success in ditching the sugar and processed foods has everything to do with buying locally grown, organic food that tastes so fresh and is bursting with nutrients. When you’re eating in that clean and fresh manner, you’ll find that your body just doesn’t need all those extra additives. You actually start to crave healthy foods and those things that used to taste so good, can more easily fade to the background.

Last month, I got inspired to make blueberry, mango and watermelon popsicles after one of my blueberry picking extravaganzas where I picked about 8 pounds.  Growing up I loved popsicles. They’re so cooling and delicious in the summer but the store bought ones are so full of sugar. Creating my own just seems like the right and healthy thing to do.

So this past weekend, with lots of  fresh fruit on my hands, I created mango, cantaloupe, watermelon and banana popsicles.  I simply made it up as I went along and I’ll share a rough approximation of what I did because I didn’t actually write it down. It came to me and I combined what I thought would taste good.  And I have to say, I did a pretty good job, they are light and delicious. Just the right amount of sweetness to put the kibosh on a sugar craving without having to resort to those artificially sweetened popsicles or high fat ice cream.

Tropical Popsicles

Ingredients

3/4 cup fresh mango
3/4 cup watermelon chunks
1 cup cantaloupe
1 banana

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Add extra watermelon if you need to thin it out a bit. Pour into popsicle molds, freeze and enjoy!

A delicious healthy treat you and your kids will love without added sugar!

Interestingly, I didn’t add any sweetener at all, not even agave.

What’s your favorite cool and sugar-free treat that you just can’t get enough of?
