Healthy Eating: Caring for Fresh, Seasonal Produce
By now you probably know that I’m a big fan of locally grown fruit and vegetables — to me, great health is all about simplicity, and buying local is one of the easiest things we can do. That’s why I’m so ecstatic that spring is here and our local farmers’ market will be opening in less than a month. To me, we can get the maximum nutritional value from locally, grown seasonal produce that hasn’t been carted halfway across the country. What’s better than just picked berries, lettuce or tomatoes that are full of flavor and pesticide-free?
So I was excited when I was flipping through the May issue of Real Simple magazine and saw a reference to a handy guide that tells you what’s in season, how to store it and how long you can expect it will last. For example, did you know that strawberries, artichokes, asparagus and spinach are coming into their own this time of year? Best of course, from your local farm stand.
Why do I like the guide? I personally love going to pick-your-own-fruit farms where it’s possible to buy in volume and then freeze for later. Smoothies, healthy muffins and other dishes are always better with juicy and flavorful options. And the guide contains helpful tips to store and use your favorite produce and get the maximum value. Simply put, easy and healthy ideas to help you feel your best.
How do you ensure that you get the most from fresh fruit and vegetables? What do you do to keep them fresh? Have a great tip? Do share!
