Healthy Eating: Pom Wonderful Pomegranate Juice

It seems kind of ironic that I’m all about healthy eating yet I had never tried a pomegranate or even pomegranate juice before a few weeks ago. You probably know that pomegranates are bursting with important antioxidants that help guard us against cancer, heart disease and other chronic health problems. And they have copious amounts of potassium, iron, beta-carotene, Vitamin C and Vitamin B5, just to name a few — basically many of the nutrients we need to prevent disease and create optimal health.

So my interest was piqued when I got an email from a woman at Pom Wonderful who works with bloggers. She wanted to know if I’d like to try a sample of the juice and share my thoughts on the blog. Sure, I said, send me a sample.

About a week later a shipment arrived at my doorstep – eight mini bottles of the juice. My husband Bruce and I got busy sampling and I have to say I really liked it. Yes, it’s a bit tangy and slightly tart, but I found it to be refreshing.  Even though we don’t drink much bottled juice in our house (opting instead to make our own fresh juices), this is one that struck a cord and I could see buying in the future.

A quick check of the Pom Wonderfulwebsite and I learned that they not only make juice but also grow the fruit. And they list a host of interesting recipes from cocktails (very fun) and smoothies to breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes.  My sampling adventures have put the pomegranate on my radar screen and I’m already thinking it would be fun to experiment with the actual fruit. Especially after yesterday’s post on creative cooking when I was discussing the power of combining interesting foods and having some unstructured fun in the kitchen.  Fresh pomegranates sound really intriguing!

What about you, had any experience with pomegrante juice or fresh pomegrantes? Have any recipes up your sleeve to share? We’d love to know. :)
