Group Exercise Builds Community and Supports Our Health
Now that I’ve gotten back in the rhythm of going to step classes again at my gym, it makes me wonder why it took me so long to remember how much I love exercising with other people, especially women.
I thought of this yesterday when I arrived at the gym a few minutes before 10 so I could get a space up front (because I’m foggy on the routines, as I have to seriously watch the instructor!). Women are natural talkers and connectors, and just in standing outside the room for a few minutes, I struck up multiple conversations. And I saw a few people I haven’t seen in ages — it was sort of like old home week. Even though I don’t know everyone by name, there’s that familiarity and ease of conversation that’s fantastic, and comforting too.
I also love exercising with women because it’s all about being yourself, no need to impress anyone. Which works out for me because after being away from Step class for quite some time (as in several years!), there are all these new steps, some of which are a mystery to me. V Step, basic right and left, L step, no problem. But when it comes to the “revolver step, over the bench and around” (or some crazy combination I still couldn’t get straight by the end of class), what’s better than looking at the person next to you in bewilderment and they flash that knowing glance back at you.
And when it comes to working on health goals — weight loss, more consistent exercise, motivation — connecting with others makes it so much easier. I think it’s the unconditional support of exercising with other women that I really like. Plus talking, laughing and getting motivated are seriously good for our health and mindset. For me, it’s a great rediscovery and sure beats the pants off of the elliptical machine every other day. Working out with other people is simply more fun.
What about you, do you prefer to exercise solo or in a group? How does exercising with others support your health goals?
