Take A Sabbatical and Rejuvenate

feetrestinginahammock.jpgI regularly get inspired by my friend Mary Lou because she’s a great example of taking exquisite care of herself and her life.

Yesterday I had a phone conference with her and some other colleagues. We meet twice a month to coach each other and build our businesses. I was struck by something she said: “I’m going on a sabbatical.”

A few simple words yet so powerful. In fact, Mary Lou decided that she isn’t feeling sufficiently inspired at the moment and that she needs to take a break to rejuvenate, in this case by taking a series of classes, some creative, some practical, to re-energize herself.

Ironically, Mary Lou thought we might think she was “slacking off” by not being focused on her work, but in reality, we were applauding her and taking a page from her book!

Why? Because Mary Lou’s simple intention and actions are all about taking a stand for her health and well being. She’s putting herself first, something that many of us could stand to work on. No, I don’t mean putting ourselves first in a selfish way. I’m talking about that when we take nurturing care of ourselves, we’re much more available and present to support others in our life, we feel more vibrant and we’re in much better health.

How many times do you say you’re going to take better care of yourself but you let life creep in and never quite get to it? Or you squeeze in a little self-care in the midst of your hectic day but you’re so busy running from one task to the next, that you never get the full benefit? Does that sound remotely familiar?

It does for me and Mary Lou reminds me that each of us can create a sabbatical that fits into our lifestyle yet supports our health.

What kind of sabbatical can you take?
