Blueberries: Eat your way to better health

blueberries.jpg

When it comes to healthy eating, blueberries are my all time favorite fruit. They’re easy to eat, full of nutrients and you can do all kinds of interesting things with them. Plus, July and August are the perfect months for blueberry picking, one of my favorite activities!

Why are blueberries so good for us? Here are a few reasons I think they’re grand:

  • They have the highest antioxidant content of any fruit so they help prevent cancer
  • They’re low in fat and calories and are a great addition to any weight loss plan
  • They’re low in fructose and are less likely to raise your blood sugar level (contrast that with tropical fruit like pineapple and bananas that are high in fructose)
  • They’re bursting with a variety of nutrients that help keep us healthy: Vitamins C and E, manganese and fiber just to name a few
  • They’re great at helping you stay regular
  • They help keep our brains healthy, reducing the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s as we age
  • They’re in season right now, and a great value when you pick them from a local farm
  • You can do an endless array of things with them

I add blueberries to smoothies, cereal and yogurt, make whole grain pancakes and use them in recipes. And often, I just eat them one by one. What’s better than that on a hot summer day?

What’s your favorite way to eat blueberries and what do you love about them?
